The international education association, Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages, Inc. (TESOL), headquartered in Alexandria, Virginia, has more than 14,000 members. Its mission is to develop the expertise of its members and others involved in teaching English to speakers of other languages to help them foster effective communication in diverse settings while respecting individuals' language rights. To this end, TESOL articulates and advances standards for professional preparation, continuing education, and student programs; links groups worldwide to enhance communication among language specialists; produces high-quality programs, services, and products; and promotes advocacy to further the profession.

The Center for Applied Linguistics (CAL) is a private, non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. This group of scholars and educators use the findings of linguistics and related sciences to identify and address language-related problems. CAL carries out a wide range of activities including research, teacher education, analysis and dissemination of information, design and development of instructional materials, technical assistance, conference planning, program evaluation, and policy analysis.
The American Association for Applied Linguistics (AAAL) is a professional organization of scholars who are interested in and actively contribute to the multi-disciplinary field of applied linguistics. AAAL members promote principled approaches to language-related concerns, including language education, acquisition and loss, bilingualism, discourse analysis, literacy, rhetoric and stylistics, language for special purposes, psycholinguistics, second and foreign language pedagogy, language assessment, and language policy and planning.
The British Association for Applied Linguistics (BAAL) is a professional association based in the UK, which provides a forum for people interested in language and the applications of linguistics. BAAL organises scientific meetings, and publishes a newsletter and conference proceedings. BAAL also sends representatives to national and international meetings of interest to its members. BAAL awards an annual Book Prize. BAAL is affiliated to AILA, the Association Internationale de Linguistique Appliquee.
Founded in 1964, AILA is an international and worldwide organization of scholars interested in and active contributors to the multi-disciplinary field of applied linguistics. The objectives of AILA are to promote research and teaching dealing with the above fields of applied linguistics and with other fields as they emerge, to disseminate the results of this research and promote the practical application of this research, and to promote international and interdisciplinary cooperation in these fields. |
